Automating tests that will be repeated a number of times catches software regression early. It also frees up your manual testers to do the tasks that are harder to automate, and even perform more exploratory testing.

When automating there are a number of things to consider. Choosing a tool that suits your needs and budget can be tricky. There are open source options, but be careful to ensure that they do all that you need.

Another common problem with automation is the hope that a tool will do all of the testing for you. If your test processes are in chaos, beware, you’ll just be automating chaos. There are plenty of expensive automation tools sitting on shelves in companies that realised this too late.
